Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment, also known as “Endodontics”, is needed when the nerve inside your tooth becomes infected through decay or damage. This infection may spread through the root canal system, which could eventually lead to an abscess. There can also be swelling of gum tissue and the face. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be removed.
What is involved in root canal treatment?
- The removal of the infected pulp and harmful bacteria present in the root canal system
- We use the latest nickel titanium single use files to prepared and help clean the canal.
- Once the infection has been cleaned out, your dentist will shape and fill the root canal and seal your tooth to prevent further infection. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle.
- The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. A crown is usually placed to protect the brittleness of the tooth.
Using local anaesthetic, the treatment overall should feel no different to having a filling placed. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and usually requires two appointments, but this will vary according to the anatomy of the tooth.
A root canal treatment is a successful, safe and long-term way of helping to save a tooth which would otherwise need to be extracted.
